Glossary

What the reading means.

Dynamic

The overall energy and intensity of the prose. Think of it as volume.

Forte: Loud. Elevated energy, strong presence.
Fortissimo: Very loud. Maximum intensity. Exclamatory, heavy, urgent.
Mezzoforte: Moderately loud. The middle of the range. Conversational intensity.
Mezzopiano: Moderately quiet. Below the middle, held back.
Pianissimo: Very quiet. Short sentences, soft consonants, low emotional intensity.
Piano: Quiet. Restrained, controlled, measured.

Melody

The directional shape of sentences as they unfold.

Arch: Sentences build then fall within themselves. Balanced, complete.
Ascending: Clauses build, sentences rise toward their endings. Energy accumulates.
Descending: Sentences fall, deflate, lose energy as they progress. Trailing off.
Level: Stable, no directional tendency. Even, controlled.
Variable: No consistent pattern across the passage. Shifting.

Psychic Distance

How close the narrator stands to the character's mind. John Gardner's scale.

1, Immediate: First person, present tense, raw interior thought.
2, Close: Free indirect discourse. The character's interiority dominates.
3, Middle: Third-person limited with some interiority.
4, Far: Third-person observational. No interiority.
5, Remote: Omniscient, landscape-scale, historical distance.

Register

The voice and formality level of the prose.

Clinical: Precise, technical, affectless. Intentionally stripped of warmth.
Colloquial: Vernacular patterns, dialect markers, regional or period-specific vocabulary.
Formal: Elevated diction, no contractions, impersonal, complex syntax.
Informal: Conversational, contractions, direct address, colloquial markers.
Lyric: Heightened diction, image-dense, rhythmically elevated above ordinary prose.

Rhythm

The dominant stress pattern of the prose. How syllables fall across the sentence.

Anapestic: Two unstressed syllables before a stressed one. Galloping, lullaby-like, propulsive.
Dactylic: One stressed syllable followed by two unstressed. Classical, falling, elegiac.
Iambic: Unstressed then stressed, alternating. The natural rhythm of English speech. Forward, conversational.
Mixed / Variable: No dominant pattern. Rhythm shifts across the passage.
Pyrrhic: Consecutive unstressed syllables. Soft, diffuse, low-energy.
Spondaic: Consecutive stressed syllables. Heavy, weighted, deliberate. Each word lands.
Sprung: Highly variable stress with heavy emphasis on short words. Compressed, irregular, intense.
Trochaic: Stressed then unstressed, alternating. Front-loaded, driving, urgent.

Syntax

The dominant structural pattern of the prose's sentences.

Balanced: No dominant pattern. Varied throughout.
Cumulative: Main clause first, then accumulating modifiers. Associative, expanding, contemporary.
Fragmented: Deliberate incomplete sentences. Rupture, urgency, compression. McCarthy, Vuong.
Hypotactic: Subordinate structure, embedded clauses, complexity. Qualification, depth, recursion. James, Woolf.
Paratactic: Coordinate structure, accumulation without subordination. Forward drive, no qualification. Hemingway, Carver.
Periodic: Main clause suspended to the end. Syntactic tension, anticipation. Classical oratory, some Morrison.

Timbre

The dominant phonetic texture of the prose. What the consonants and vowels feel like in the mouth.

Fricative: High density of F, V, S, Z, SH, TH. Hissing, abrasive, friction.
Liquid: High density of L and R sounds. Flowing, smooth, continuous.
Mixed: No single category dominates.
Nasal: High density of M, N, NG. Humming, resonant, warm.
Neutral: At the English baseline. No notable texture.
Open Vowel: High density of unblocked vowels (A, O). Bright, expansive, open.
Plosive: High density of B, P, D, T, K, G. Sharp, percussive, high-energy.

Tonality

The overall emotional color of the passage.

Bittersweet: Positive surface with loss underneath. Reflection, nostalgia.
Bright: Positive valence. Open, warm, ascending.
Dark: Negative valence. Heavy, closed, descending.
Ironic: Positive diction with contradicting context. The gap is the meaning.
Neutral: No strong emotional charge. Observational, flat.
Resolved: Arrives at completion. Releases tension.
Suspended: Ambiguous, unresolved. Neither arriving nor departing.
